Nightmares and Night terrors

Nightmares:

  • How common are they?

  • 75% of children have at least one nightmare during childhood.

  • 24% of children aged 2-5 years will have a nightmare

  • 41% of children aged 6-10 will have a nightmare

 Night terrors:

  • Common in children ages between 3 and 8 yo

  • A child who experiences them may scream, shout and even jump out of bed

  • Their eyes will be open but they wont be fully awake

  • Usually occur in the early part of the night and last up to 15 minutes

  • Why do they happen? Common in children with a family history of night terrors and sleep walking behaviour

    Sleep terrors differ from nightmares in terms of:

    o    Sleep stage

    o    Timing

    o    Intensity of distress

    o    Motor behaviour

    o    Mood during episode

    o    Mental content

    o    Memory for event

    o    Family history
